Atorvastatin is synthetic lipid lowering agent, used along with diet, exercise and weight loss programme to decrease the risk of various cardiovascular diseases.
The usual starting dose is 10-20mg per day and the maximum limit of the dose is 80 mg per day. Dose depends on the amount of the cholesterol to be lowered.
- Atorvastatin decreases the effects of warfarin and blood concentration of digoxin.
- Drugs which increase the levels of Atorvastatin in the body may causes toxicity. Hence, few drugs such as, Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, Indinavir, Cyclosporine, etc. should not be combined with Atorvastatin
Contraindicated during Pregnancy and Breast feeding.
Rousvastatin is also used along with diet, exercise and weight loss programmes.
The starting dose for Rousvastatin is 10mg once daily. The average daily dose is 20mg- 40mg once daily depending on number of factors such as age, other medicines taken, other existing medical conditions, etc.
Some drugs such as Gemfibrozil, Fenofibrate and Cyclosporin causes serious muscle injury if taken along with Rosuvastatin.
Contraindicated during pregnancy, breast feeding and kidney disorders.
